John Hoffman - In Memoriam
John Hoffman passed away on April 13, 2025.
The Boulder Big Band was formed in 1997 under John Hoffman's direction. John was a music educator for most of his life. He also "taught half of Colorado to ski," and was always busy restoring old cars in his spare time.
Through the Boulder Big Band, John was able to continue his passion to lead and educate musicians. John played the trumpet and the baritone, and was promoted to Music Director Emeritus when he passed music director responsibility to Sheri VandeRiet. Even after he retired from playing he remained our greatest fan.
We have many, many fond memories of John, and he will be greatly missed. If it weren't for John Hoffman, the Boulder Big Band would not exist. Thank you, John.

Sheri VandeRiet - Band Leader
Sheri has a Bachelor's degree in Music Education and plays the alto and soprano saxophones and piano. She has been with the Boulder Big Band since the beginning and now runs the band.Â
The Boulder Big Band, Combo Band, and Oktoberfest Band is a service coordinated by Sheri VandeRiet. Each musician in the group operates as an independent contractor.
Sheri has a core set of musicians as well as various area musicians that she pulls in as needed to form the Big Band, Combo, and Oktoberfest band. The Big Band is her primary focus.
